Garage Studios Flash Course

Garage Studios Flash Photography Course ~ I recently attended a one day course at Garage Studios to improve my knowledge of flash lighting. The day was excellent and jam packed with advice about equipment and technique. Pictured above are two portraits i took of Flickrite Tommy Forbes who was my partner for the day.

The Tindersticks

Tindersticks Gig Poster ~ Poster designed for Melting Vinyl in Brighton to promote a rare Tindersticks gig. The band all loved the poster, which was a thrill for me since i have been a huge fan for about fifteen years.

Journey On photos

Journey On ~ An event organized by Brighton & Hove City Council to mark the re-launch of their online journey planner. Cogapp created a GPS/mapping tool which was used by cycle couriers and school children at the event to write ‘Journey On’ dynamically onto a Google map using mobile devices. The event ended at Brighton Station where there was a large screen mapping the progress of the participants.

I was on foot photographing the event and uploading photos to Flickr on the move, this content was then being projected on the screens at the station. The highlight for me was meeting Flickr hero Lomokev, who was photographing the event from his brompton bike.

Booth Museum photos

Booth Museum Photography ~ Nothing says ‘Fun Day Out’ quite like a trip to the local museum of taxidermy. I finally visited the weird and wonderful Booth Museum after years of living in Brighton and managed to get some interesting shots for my personal archive and Flickr stream. The best bit was the selection of Victoriana photos featuring squirrels playing poker whilst smoking cigars.

SCIE screens

SCIE E-Learning Interactives ~ The project was to produce 6 e-learning resources to help people working in care learn about dealing with Children of Prisoners and Challenging Behaviour in Children’s Residential Care Homes.

I was lead designer on this project and designed the immersive environments used in the final interactives. The environments i created were built up from stock and custom made imagery. The backgrounds and characters were designed to illustrate the content and help engage the workers using these tools who have varying levels of literacy.

I consulted with staff who worked in relevant care homes and with subject matter experts who were writing the content, then created environments that represented typical residential care homes, family homes, notice boards and table tops. Users are guided around these areas when using the learning tools and shown photographs, interactive diagrams in text books, video shown on tv screens and interactive filing cabinets! All intended to make the educational experience more engaging and fun.

National Archives photos

National Archives Photography ~ I spent a day at the National Archives in Kew taking photos in their reading rooms and storage areas. The photos that i took were part of a web site refresh being undertaken by Cogapp and were used to help form a brief for the use of photography and how it is used to represent the organization.

It is a fascinating place, housing 1,000 years of historical documents. There are vast storage areas containing the archives, reading rooms for different types of document, restoration teams behind the scenes and other staff and volunteers scanning and digitzing areas of the collection.

Prudential Eye Video ~ A ‘making of’ video i edited together from film and photos collated during the project. The short showreel shows the process from initial test through to installation of the cutting edge art installation provided by Cogapp.

V&A Interactive

V&A Museum ~ The brief from the V&A was to produce a simple and elegant interactive in keeping with the V&A brand. I was lead designer on this project.

The museum had high resolution photos of all of the collection which were stunning, my main objective was to keep the pages as simple as possible to allow the jewellery to be the main focus. I worked from wireframes which were provided by the production department and arranged regular design reviews with the client and Cogapp’s Interactivity Specialist throughout the project.

The result is a beautiful and simple interactive, now on display in the V&A’s Jewellery Gallery.

Icons of England ~ Icons was a project commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media & Sport offshoot Culture Online. Launched in 2006 by Cogapp, the site was designed to provide ‘A portrait of England’ where users could vote for their favourite English icons. The site recieved coverage in every national newspaper, many local papers and on national TV and radio.

Pictured here are a few of the silhouettes i created to represent the official Icons that were nominated and voted for by the public.
